There are moments that I remember from growing up. Sitting in the kitchen, on a Saturday morning, hopeful that my Mama would make her magic pancakes. I’d watch as she’d mysteriously dump ingredients into the Tupperware measuring bowl. I remember how she’d make sure the pan was hot enough, and then the sizzle of the batter. She’d also have sweet tea set on the table, and we would have my favorite breakfast.

Now, I have to admit I’ve learned a lot of things about cooking from my mama. We deemed 2020 the year of bread and we experimented and made all sorts of fantastic loaves. But, the pancakes. The pancakes have thwarted me, for all of my years… until 2022. Deemed the year of the pancakes. I stood in the kitchen and watched her mix up the batch of her Magic pancakes (using the same Tupperware measuring bowl). I looked at the consistency of the batter. I noted the amount of oil in the pan and watched as she adjusted the heat. I’ll have you know, I am pancake-thwarted no more.

My boys always a fan of the frozen pancakes, but they love “Mama pancakes” the best. This week they were astonished as G’Mema (what they call her) whipped up “Mama pancakes.”

“G’Mema you know how to make Mama pancakes?”

Her response, “Who do you think taught your mama how to make these?”

And my response was, “Boys, she is the original magic maker.” Because she was. And she is. Those pancakes are still magic to me. There’s magic in the making.

I’m often surprised at how I can make anything a party. I can change the inflection of my voice and add in “party” to the end of the sentence, and BAM! A business meeting can become an exciting party. I can help make the magic, but I’m also realizing that there is magic in being a mama. I’m watching magic in the making. My beautiful boys and their imaginations. The way they love each other. The way they like to dress up as super heroes and build fantastic creations. These are things I want to add to the list of what I’ll carry with me forever. The kisses. The memories. The magic in the making, in the growing, in the loving.

These magic moments, never to be taken for granted.

Much love,
